Call for participation festival “Art and the Future City” (19-20th January 2017)

What might the city look like at the end of the 21st century? The festival Art and the Future City (19-20th January 2017), organised by Brussels Arts Platform in collaboration with Beursschouwburg, RITCS School of Arts and Doctoral School of Human Sciences - VUB, focuses on understanding how future cities can be imagined, conceptualised as well as performed and practiced. The call for participation - contributions, either in the form of papers, presentations, artistic interventions, performances and/or screenings - is now open and has been extended until 15th September. The festival is curated by Peter Van Goethem, who will also share the insights from his own PhD "Screening the city: a cinematographic archaeology of the city of Brussels".

New PhD students at KCB

On 4th December, three candidates took part in the 'PhD in the Arts selection' at KCB. On the basis of their artistic performance and research proposal, two candidates were successful: Sarah Defrise (voice) and Philippe Lamouris (composition, piano). Their admission to the PhD in the Arts was confirmed by the Council (Platformraad) of the Brussels Arts Platform on 14th December.

Worldwide release of ‘Looking for Cole’ (dvd) and publication ‘A Cole Porter Companion’

Wilfried Van den Brande's documentary Looking for Cole. A portrait of the great American composer Cole Porter already hit television screens worldwide, but will also be released on dvd by Warner Classics. This will be followed by the publication of A Cole Porter Companion (University of Illinois Press, July 2016), which contains the essay 'Cole Porter, European'. Both were part of Wilfried Van den Brande's Doctorate in the Arts.

On 15th April, four candidates took part in the 'PhD in the Arts selection' at KCB. On the basis of their artistic performance and research proposal, three candidates were successful: Carles Cristobal (bassoon), Kostas Tosidis (guitar) and Andreas van Zoelen (saxophone).

After an acclaimed concert at the Opéra de Lille on Wednesday evening, showcasing the work of Pierluigi Billone, Tom De Cock successfully defended his Doctorate in the Arts Improving the Efficiency of Practice and Performance in Contemporary Percussion Repertoire at KCB yesterday. Congratulations Tom!

It was an intensive day of stimulating talks and interesting discussions, which we hope to pick up again in the near future.
